To start off with, I want to let you know that we’ve performed millions of searches and put in a lot of hours to observe these statistics.
The first type of statistic revolves around which industry is most likely to perform a BDH. The industry that is least likely to perform BDHs is the financial industry. Even though they still happen, from the numbers we’ve observed, they happen at a rate of 1 out of 700 presentations. Continuing along this line, the manufacturing industry has a BDH rate of 1 out of 610 presentations, the engineering industry has a rate of 1 out of 594 and the legal industry has a rate of 1 out of 535. The industry that has the most frequent rate of BDH, note this is industry and not position, is the medical industry where 1 out of 490 presentations turns into a BDH.
The next type of statistic revolves around which type of position is most likely to see a BDH. The least likely position to become a BDH is an engineer at a rate of 1 out of 800 presentations. Nursing positions follow at a rate of 1 out of 629. The types of positions most likely for BDH are sales/marketing positions, hands down, at a rate of 1 out of 375 presentations.
In my 27 years of experience, this is because of the nature of people who fill these positions and that by constantly making deals and networking, if they don’t get hired for the initial position, they will re-approach later. Now clients tell me that they watch LinkedIn so they are not worried about BDHs regarding their personnel. Well I’m here to tell you this strategy is becoming less and less effective, especially over the past 2 years, because hiring companies knowingly performing a BDH will tell the candidate not to update their LinkedIn profile.
